As human
beings we strive to always fit in and follow up on the latest trends. We crave off of other peoples gossip and new.
These constant updates, post, pictures, gossip, keep us coming back for more.
We keep coming back due to the fact that we fear of missing out (FOMO) or being
left out of the loop. Some people would rather sit inside on their computers
and talk on social media sites rather than interact face-to-face. The problem here is that sometimes it can
become an obsession to “stalk” others online because we always have the need to
keep updated and informed on the actions of our friends, family and
acquaintances. This leads to people becoming dependent which causes them to
choose social media over more important things in life. This website
discusses the extent people go to keep their social media sites around due to
the fact they are fearful of missing out on things going on throughout sites
they use. A quote in which was said on this site was by Jeff Tinsley, who is a
CEO of MyLife, and he says that... "Consumers are bombarded with so much information online—from status updates and photos to tweets and check-ins—that our anxiety around 'missing out' has shifted to our digital lives,".
Our lives are based around technology which is the major
factor which causes people to become addicted because of the availability.
We tend to
get into routines such as checking out social media sites daily which soon
becomes almost compulsive. Some people are logged on 24/7 even when they are
using the washroom, eating dinner and even sleeping. Throughout this website, it explains
how obsessed people become and a certain quote that caught my eye in
regards to this topic was....
“I don’t want to miss something such as who is befriending whom or an important event like birthdates of friends and friends of friends or status update
The need to always want to know what’s going on can be as so little as a friend’s birthday as the quote states above. Some people will even go to the extent and open up multiple accounts just to be sure they are not missing out on anything. We are constantly updating, checking, posting just to make sure that we aren’t out of the loop. It is a little scary the extent people go just to make sure that they aren’t missing out on anything. This video basically tells it all, people really do suffer from FOMO!
