Addiction
usually refers to compulsive behavior that leads to negative effects. In most
addictions, people feel obligated to do certain activities so often that they
become a harmful habit, which then interferes with other important activities
such as work or school. For example checking Facebook status updates or
"stalking" people's profiles on Facebook, for hours on end.
Although
social networking can make people feel better about themselves and more
connected to society, when Facebook friends
take the place of real family members and updating status’ takes priority over
real-life pleasures and responsibilities, you know that your on the verge of an
addiction. One of the biggest dangers of social
media addiction is some people’s marriages. Sociologists and psychologists have
questioned whether excessive use of social media could play a role in divorce.
It has been said that Facebook ruins 1 in 5 marriages. Eighty-four percent of people aged 19 to 29 said they
would rather do without their current partner or their car than give up
Internet access. Mental health professionals report too much computer time is
becoming a common thread in marriage and family counseling sessions.
Social media
addiction is an opportunity for people to create and live in a fantasy world.
They can get rid of all of their family life problems and get away from
reality. If husbands or wives feel as though they are not receiving attention
from the other or are not being listened to they may resort to the addiction of
social media.
Although there
are many dangers to using social media, anxiety, depression and psychological
disorders are not caused by social media addiction.

Hello Chelsea
ReplyDeleteIn regards to your post I find it to be a very sad situation that so many marriages are ruined from social media sites. As I was reading through articles on the internet, what surprised me the most was about how attorneys actually use evidence on social media sites to use in their cases. How can an attorney use something on the internet against you? I guess if you are willing to say it then you are willing to take the risk. It shocked me as that people would expose themselves on social media sites that could be used against them in court for their divorces. People actually are sharing information that should only be between them and their spouse rather than the whole world. I believe this is where people get themselves in trouble. It seems as though more and more people use social media to reconnect with old flings or even stay connected with the people their having an affair with. I think this should be an open discussion in a marriage to prevent from keeping secrets hidden. If I were in a situation that my spouse was always using social media constant rather than spending time with me that would be the red flag for me and I would definitely want answers wouldn’t you?
